POTA

Why Parks on the Air (POTA)

Combines Nature and Radio: I love being outdoors, and POTA gives me a reason to explore parks while enjoying amateur radio. It’s the perfect mix of fresh air, scenery, and technology.
Portable Challenge: There’s a special thrill in setting up a station in a remote or rustic location. It challenges my skills in antenna setup, power management, and working with minimal gear.
Community and Camaraderie: Whether I’m activating a park or chasing from home, there’s a strong sense of community.
Adventure and Discovery: Every activation is an adventure. I get to discover new parks, scenic locations, and sometimes hidden gems I wouldn’t have visited otherwise.
Encourages Travel and Exploration: POTA motivates me to get out and explore more of my region or even plan trips around park activations.
Skill Building: It helps me refine my radio skills—improving my portable operation techniques, logging, and pileup management. It’s also a great way to practice under different band and weather conditions.
Instant Gratification and Accomplishment: There’s something satisfying about making those QSOs and logging them successfully. Feels like a mini-win.
Promotes Conservation and Awareness: Spending more time in parks has deepened my appreciation for public lands. It makes me more aware of the need to preserve these spaces.

Parks on the Air (POTA)

POTA stands for “Parks on the Air,” which is a program designed for amateur radio operators (also known as hams) to promote the activation of parks and outdoor areas around the world. Participants set up their radio stations in designated parks and attempt to make contact with other operators.

The program encourages the exploration and enjoyment of nature while also engaging in amateur radio operations. Activators (those who set up in a park) and hunters (those who contact activators) can earn points based on their activities, fostering community involvement and outdoor recreation.

If you’re interested in participating, you would typically need a valid amateur radio license, a radio setup, and knowledge of operating procedures. You can find more information and resources on the POTA website or related amateur radio forums.
